NCH’s Crusher Lubrication Program

Crushers are industry-known for often being one of the most neglected pieces of equipment in mining and aggregate operations. Unfortunately, crushers, mills, screeners, and conveyor belt systems are all susceptible to many costly problems when they’ve been neglected.

Crusher Equipment Grease Problems & Issues

Because of where crushers are used, grease is needed to help solve many lubrication problems.

  • Heavy Loads can often squeeze grease out from between the equipment’s metal surfaces, leaving the parts unprotected and vulnerable to damage.
  • Heat and friction results in melted or charred grease, leaving surfaces unprotected.
  • Contamination issues can occur.
Heavy Loads Heavy loads can often squeeze grease out from between the equipment’s metal surfaces, leaving the parts unprotected and vulnerable to damage. Heavy loads create the potential for excessive wear – resulting in costly downtime and parts replacement. Heat & Friction Crushers are subject to three types of heat:
  • Ambient heat from hot weather.
  • Operating heat, such as in a steel mill.
  • The heat caused by friction due to metal-to-metal contact.
This heat and friction results in melted or charred grease, leaving surfaces unprotected. Contamination Contamination issues can occur when:
  • Dust and other particles get into the grease and grind away at the metal surfaces.
  • Mud, and water wash away grease leaving the metal surfaces unprotected. This results in metal-to-metal rust, corrosion, and general wear. This abrasive wear, also caused by dust and grit, is the single most destructive wear on heavy duty machinery and equipment.

Crusher Equipment - Common Oil Problems & Issues

  • Leaking is one of the most common problems found in gearboxes.
  • Dry starts can also lead to flash rusting and corrosion, gear failure and costly shutdown, as well as mechanical wear and cold welding.
  • Oxidation & Foaming can cause high operating temperatures, false oil level readings and excessive gear wear from poor lubrication. 
  • Water Contamination causes oil to emulsify, promoting foam which can cause further issues.

Leaking Seals: Unfortunately, leaking seals is one of the most common problems found in gear boxes. Seals can leak because:

  • They crack with age after becoming brittle
  • They can experience foam build up from increased pressure which causes them to rupture
  • Acids can attack their surfaces from oxidized oil
  • They can experience abrasive wear from metal shavings and rust particles

The result of the oil leaks are:

  • Poor lubrication
  • Potential safety and environmental problems
  • Downtime that can cost the business significant amounts
  • The replacement of parts
  • Loss of oil

Dry Starts: During drain off, most gear oils drain off, leaving gears unprotected. It is also important to note that 80-85% of gear wear occurs during start-up. Dry starts can also lead to flash rusting and corrosion, gear failure and costly shutdown, as well as mechanical wear and cold welding.

Oxidation & Foaming: Oxidation can commonly result in varnish and sludge, corrosion, acids, pitting and seal failure, as well as thickened oil which causes equipment to work harder.

Foaming can cause high operating temperatures, false oil level readings and excessive gear wear from poor lubrication. Foam can also cause oil to leak out of vents and increase pressure, which can blow-out seals and gaskets.

Water Contamination: All gear boxes contain water, and as the gear oil heats up and cools down, condensation forms. Water contamination causes oil to emulsify, promoting foam which can cause further issues. Water contamination can also cause oil to breakdown and oxidize faster, non-lubricated hot spots and increased rust and corrosion.
