Case Study | Maintenance | Fast and safe removal of cured acrylic paint: A Success Story

A ST200 & Torrent 500 case study, from NCH Asia Pacific

Client Background

Our client is a chemical plant specializing in the production of acrylic-based polymers, widely used as a primary raw material in water-based paints. Efficient cleaning methods are essential to maintain their high standards of quality and safety during production processes.

Objective

The primary objective was to find a safer and faster cleaning method to remove cured resin residues effectively, and address issues like:

  • Reducing wastewater discharge compared to previous methods using caustic soda.
  • Simplifying the removal of residues within the complex parts of equipment, such as pump housings and valve openings.

Problem Statement

During bi-monthly shutdown maintenance, cleaning cured acrylic resin from production equipment consumes substantial time and labor. Previous methods involved soaking components in a 30% caustic soda solution for three days, which posed several challenges:

  • Safety Issues: High caustic solutions are hazardous, requiring additional safety protocols.
  • Wastewater Limits: The plant faces strict wastewater discharge limits, and exceeding these limits incurs high fees.

Solution Implementation

We started using the following NCH Partscleaning units namely ST200, and Torrent 500, The change has been transformative:

  • Reduced Cleaning Time: The cleaning time has been reduced from three days to five hours.
  • Improved Safety: The new method eliminates the need for highly caustic solutions, reducing safety risks.
  • Cost Savings: Lower labor costs and reduced need for chemical disposal have significantly cut expenses.

Conclusion

This new cleaning process has provided an effective and safe solution, reduced equipment downtime, and enhanced operational efficiency for the client.

Basic Knowledge of Metal Cleaning: Acid Cleaners vs. Alkaline Cleaners

Acidic and alkaline cleaners are commonly used in metal cleaning, each designed to remove different types of contaminants. Acid cleaners are typically effective for removing rust, scale, and mineral deposits, while alkaline cleaners are better suited for dissolving oils, grease, and organic residues. Understanding the properties and limitations of each type helps ensure the right cleaning solution is selected for safe and effective maintenance.
