Case Study | Chem-Aqua | Power Plant Achieves Monthly Savings by Sustainably Enhancing Cooling Tower Efficiency

A power plant supplies electricity to various locations but had not previously implemented a treatment program for its cooling tower. The softener control was inadequate, leading to total hardness levels of 40-50 ppm. Additionally, vacuum pressure exceeded -0.8 kg/cm² due to scale buildup on the condenser tubes, resulting in issues with heat transfer and steam condensation.

To maintain efficient operation, the vacuum pressure needed to be below -0.8 kg/cm², which required reducing the operational load, negatively impacting efficiency. Consequently, the condenser had to be taken offline for cleaning.

The power plant turned to NCH Asia Pacific to enhance the cooling tower’s productivity and efficiency through sustainable solutions.

Following the Chem-Aqua Water Treatment System, the results were:

1) Significant scale reduction
2) Stable vacuum pressure below -0.8 kg/cm², eliminating the need to reduce the load
3) 40% decrease in time, labor, and waste for condenser cleaning
4) Hardness after softening reduced to < 5 ppm
5) Hardness in the cooling tower maintained below 30 ppm
6) Increased electricity production from 6.5 MW to 8.0 MW, leading to substantial monthly savings.
