Article | Moisture and Rust: A Corrosive Combination

Moisture is a primary catalyst for rust, a form of corrosion that affects metals. Here’s a breakdown of the process and preventive measures:

How Moisture Causes Rust:

  • Oxidation: When iron or steel comes into contact with oxygen in the presence of moisture, a chemical reaction occurs.
  • Electrolysis: The moisture acts as an electrolyte, facilitating the transfer of electrons between the iron and oxygen.
  • Rust Formation: The result of this reaction is the formation of rust, which is a reddish-brown oxide.

Preventive Measures:

  • Coatings:
    • Paint: Apply protective coatings like paint or varnish to create a barrier between the metal and moisture.
    • Galvanising: Coat the metal with zinc, which acts as a sacrificial anode, protecting the underlying metal from corrosion.
    • Powder coating: A durable, long-lasting coating that provides excellent protection against corrosion.
  • Drying:
    • Ventilation: Ensure proper ventilation in areas where moisture can accumulate, such as basements, attics, and bathrooms.
    • Dehumidifiers: Use dehumidifiers to reduce humidity levels and prevent moisture from condensing on metal surfaces.
  • Cleaning:
    • Regular cleaning: Remove dirt, salt, and other contaminants that can accelerate rust formation.
    • Rust removal: If rust has already formed, use a rust remover or wire brush to remove it before applying a protective coating.
  • Storage:
    • Proper storage: Store metal items in dry, well-ventilated areas.
    • Protective coverings: Use protective covers or bags to shield metal objects from moisture and environmental factors.
  • Maintenance:
    • Regular inspections: Inspect metal structures and equipment for signs of rust or corrosion.
    • Prompt repairs: Address any rust or corrosion issues promptly to prevent further damage.

Case Study | Facilities | Hospital Reduces FOG Level from 104ppm to 3.9 ppm and Saves Health Department Penalty on Kidney Dialysis Waste

Our client, a leading healthcare facility, had been facing an increase in kidney dialysis patients, which resulted in a significant rise in waste production. Specifically, the wastewater shows three times the acceptable level of FOG (fats, oils, and grease), making it more challenging than typical cases.
Furthermore, the hospital had been disinfecting with chlorine before discharge into the sanitary sewer. This method also causes the death of beneficial bacteria, slowing the breakdown of waste. As a result, the hospital encountered considerable challenges related to the environment, time, equipment, and data.
