Case Study | Chem-Aqua | Maximizing Efficiency and Sustainability in Kuala Lumpur Hotel Cooling Water Systems

In the hospitality industry, efficient cooling water treatment is crucial to maintaining system performance and longevity. A well-known hotel in Kuala Lumpur faced significant challenges, including scale formation, corrosion, and biofouling in its cooling water system. These issues threatened not only the system’s efficiency but also its sustainability.

To combat these challenges, the hotel implemented the HandiChem Solid Program, using Handipak55 for antiscalant and corrosion inhibition. This solution provided a calculated dosage of one block (11 lbs) per month, ensuring consistent protection against scaling and corrosion, which are common issues in cooling water systems.

Another challenge was managing the risk of biofouling, a problem that can severely impact the efficiency of cooling systems. To address this, the hotel used bioDART, a real-time monitoring tool that controls biofouling potential in the cooling water. This system allowed for continuous oversight, enabling the hotel to make immediate adjustments as needed.

In addition to these solutions, the hotel incorporated bioeXile into its regular program. Coupled with MB60B, CB9099, and MB215, this approach was designed to prevent biofilm growth, which is often exacerbated by high cycles of concentration (CoC) in cooling water.

The results of these targeted solutions have been impressive:

  • Water Savings: Significant reduction in water usage.
  • Energy Savings: Improved system efficiency leading to lower energy consumption.
  • CO2 Carbon Footprint Reduction: A 1.2 metric ton reduction in carbon emissions annually.
  • Cost Savings: Approximately 10% annual savings from the total cost of ownership (TCO).
  • Reduced Chemical Usage: Lowered need for chemicals, resulting in both cost and environmental benefits.

These solutions have not only resolved the hotel’s cooling water challenges but also contributed to its overall operational efficiency and sustainability efforts.
