Biofilms are complex communities of surface-attached bacteria that are formed when free-floating bacteria in the bulk system water attach to surfaces. The bacteria are encapsulated within a polymeric protective coating, sometimes called slime. This can cause severe issues in water systems that can be extremely hard to control. The molecules that form the biofilm are bound together with a locking mechanism termed the calcium bridge which high doses of biocides cannot break.
Problems faced when biofilm is present include:
- Corrosion damage - acid produced as a metabolic by-product by the bacteria can cause Microbiological Influenced Corrosion (MIC) , rapidly reducing equipment life
- Harmful waterborne pathogens - pathogens can grow in biofilm that are harmful to human health, including the bacteria associated with Legionnaires disease
- Increased energy costs - biofilms are very insulating, reducing heat transfer efficiency 4 times more than calcium scale deposits
The bioeXile biofilm cleaning process works by disruptingthe calcium bridge to allow biofilm to be destroyed by the biocide.
