The diesel fuel additive test – are they worth it?

With many types of diesel fuel additives on the market, it can be difficult to grasp an understanding of how they can positively affect your engine. As a result, NCH Asia is here to advise you on the relevant procedures and tests to consider before you purchase an additive.

What are diesel fuel additives?

A diesel fuel additive is a chemical solution that is added to a fuel tank as a supplement. The diesel fuel then becomes diluted and the additive is used to improve the function of:

  • The fuel pump – the fuel pump draws the diesel from the tank.
  • The injectors/carburetor – this is where the fuel and air are combined. Following this, the fuel is excreted as a mist that moves over to the combustion chamber.
  • The combustion chamber – this is where the amalgamation of air and water is ignited. The pressure created from this ignition creates the power that propels the turbine blades.

Are diesel additives worth your time and money?

Although the additives pass through the engine in the same manner, each fuel additive effects the engine in a different way.

Assessing the condition of the vehicle is the first thing you must do, this can be achieved in a number of ways:

  • Check the age of your vehicle – many diesel fuel additives are designed to improve the efficiency of an engine. As vehicles age, the engine performance is progressively reduced. Vehicles that are older than 10 years will benefit the most from adding an enhancement supplement to the fuel.
  • Discover your objectives – many fuel additives are purchased due to publicity stating that additives offer a quick-fix. It is important to make an accurate assessment on what element of your engine’s performance you would like to improve. Many additives are multi-functioning and solve a combination of automobile-related issues. Firstly, discover the area of improvement you would like to focus on and make an informed decision based on your findings.
  • Research, trial and test – engines differ depending on make and model of the vehicle and each supplement has different chemical components that work together in alternate ways. There is a broad spectrum of additives available so researching first is crucial. Trialing and testing these additives will ensure you get the best from your vehicle and for your money.

Although diesel fuel additives will have no negative impacts on your engine function, you should always consider your purchase beforehand. Diesel fuel additives should not be used as a replacement for regular engine maintenance and vehicle conservation – they are an operation upgrade.
