Decades of Dedication: Lessons from a Lifetime in Finance
Hi everyone! I’m Natalie Fang, Finance Manager at NCH Taiwan. Looking back on my career, I feel incredibly grateful for the experiences, challenges, and friendships that have shaped me.
My journey at NCH has been long and rewarding, starting from an entry-level finance role to where I am today. Over the years, I’ve also taken on operational management responsibilities, which gave me a broader understanding of how the company functions. Our finance team is small but efficient, with each member playing a crucial role in keeping things running smoothly. We’ve built a strong foundation of trust and collaboration, ensuring that no challenge is too great for us to overcome together.
One of the most unforgettable moments in my career happened three decades ago. A tragic accident took the life of a warehouse colleague, leaving only a part-time student to handle operations. Determined to keep the business running, I spent my mornings at the warehouse, ensuring orders were shipped, before heading back to the Taipei office in the afternoon. This continued for months, but through teamwork and perseverance, we pulled through. That experience reinforced my belief that resilience and support can help us navigate even the toughest situations.
Throughout my career, I’ve learned that finance is more than just numbers. It’s about problem-solving, strategic thinking, and attention to detail. A mentor once told me, “Numbers are not just figures—they reflect the reality of a company’s health and direction.” This mindset has guided me in making informed decisions that impact not just the finance department, but the entire business.
One of my proudest accomplishments was implementing Oracle’s financial system within a month. It was a challenging yet rewarding experience, and seeing our efficiency improve significantly was a testament to the power of teamwork and determination.
To those starting out in finance, my advice is simple: be meticulous, because even small mistakes can have big consequences. Stay curious and keep learning, as the field is always evolving. Most importantly, develop strong relationships with your colleagues—finance is not just about numbers, but about working together to make sound business decisions.
As I approach retirement, my goal is to pass on my experience to the next generation of finance professionals. I hope to leave behind a team that is not only skilled but also motivated to continue growing and improving. While my time at NCH is nearing its final chapter, the lessons I’ve learned and the people I’ve met will always stay with me.
Thank you to everyone who has been a part of my journey!
