Which liquid drain cleaner is best?

Choosing the “best liquid drain cleaner” for your application is important - if an inappropriate solution is selected, it is likely that the blockage will not improve.

The range of drain cleaning and unblocking solutions on the market is vast. As a result, when tackling household or commercial drain blockages, it can be a challenge to find the “best liquid drain cleaner” to solve drainage problems efficiently and effectively.

Many solutions boast excellent results - to “clear and clean your blocked drain first time, every time”. However, the reality is often not so simple…

If the wrong solution is selected, it is likely that the blockage will not improve

A blocked drain can cause problems such as:

  • Unsightly and hazardous waste resurgence
  • Leaks in need of immediate repair
  • Expensive structural damage

It is clear that finding the right solution as quickly as possible is essential.

What should you consider before purchasing a liquid drain cleaner?

If your drain is blocked, it is important to consider the type of drain blockage. A blockage is likely to fall into one of the following categories:

  • FOG (fats, oils and grease) – fats, oils and grease solidify over time (particularly when in contact with cold water). As the fats, oils and grease solidify, they build-up in the drainage system and can be difficult to break down.
  • TSS (total suspended solids) – solids range from hair blockages to industrial waste build-up. TSS accumulations are often much harder to break down and require a much stronger chemical drain cleaner to remove the blockage.

In addition, it is also important to consider the premises in which the drain resides. For example, the strength and quantity of drain cleaner needed for a residential establishment may differ significantly to that of an industrial environment.

As a premises manager or home owner, you will need to review the chemicals used in the liquid drain cleaner and the effect that these chemicals can have on the pipes and fittings as well as the environment. Following safety procedures and providing Personal Protective Equipment where necessary is also very important.

Consider the following safety precautions when using a liquid drain cleaner:

  • Are protective gloves required?
  • Is eye/face protection required?
  • Appropriate removal and disposal of any contaminated clothing and their appropriate disposal

The best drain treatment system should be tailored to your application and industry
